Yellow Belt

Stephen Myers passed his yellow belt test, and he is a leader now.

These pictures remind me a lot of karate movies I've seen years ago.

I think he has martial arts in his blood.

This Fall we have rain showers and rainbows.

(But what we need is rain checks).

All houses have trees except ours.

But next year I will plant two or three, for sure.

We have nice yards and beautiful landscape colors this year.

We have a nice neighborhood also.

We are happy to live here in Provo, Utah.

October 2009

October 2009. We went to Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Lehi to celebrate five birthdays: Angela's, Kate's, Todd's, Holli's and Luis's.

This week Luis has been accepted as a permanent resident. Welcome to the United States of America, Luis.

This morning Chloe was playing outside in our yard. When she saw me, she said: "Grandpa." This is another thing to celebrate today.

Vero and Chad became engaged last month.

Chad took Vero in a trip to Jamaica first. And then in Salt Lake he hired an helipcoter and asked Vero to marry him in the air.

After the dinner we went home to blow candles and eat cake.

Elie Wiesel - "The Perils of Indifference"

Elie Wiesel, a holocaust survivor, is a writer famous for his witness to the sufferings endured by Jews in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany.
This is an excerpt of his speech addressing President Clinton and members of the US Congress in April 1999.

"Over there, behind the black gates of Auschwitz, the most tragic of all prisoners were the Muselmaenner, as they were called. Wrapped in their torn blankets, they would sit or lie on the ground, staring vacantly into space, unaware of who or where they were - strangers to their surroundings. They no longer felt pain, hunger, thirst. They feared nothing. They felt nothing. They were dead and did not know it."

"Rooted in our tradition, some of us felt that to be abandoned by humanity then was not the ultimate. We felt that to be abandoned by God was worse than to be punished by Him. Better an unjust God than an indifferent one. For us to be ignored by God was a harsher punishment than to be a victim of His anger. Man can live from God - not outside God. God is wherever we are. Even in suffering? Even in suffering."

"In a way, to be indifferent to that suffering is what makes the human being inhuman. Indifference, after all, is more dangerous than anger and hatred. ....

"Indifference elicits no response. Indifference is not a response. Indifference is not a beginning; it is an end. And, therefore, indifference is always the friend of the enemy, for it benefits the aggressor - never the victim, whose pain is magnified when he or she feels forgotten."

Angela's Birthday

October 1st was Angela's birthday.

Claudia came in the morning and took her mom to have lunch somewhere.

Angela is so happy with her daughters.

In the evening the family was at home to sing "La Vida Generosa" and eat cake.

Luis Carlos, Holli and Chloe came also.

Her birthday found her with osteoporosis, arthritis, escoliosis and more. But she will overcome.

I love her so much. She is so brave.

She is the brand new Relief Society President in our Branch. She loves to work hard with the sisters. Everybody loves Angela.

She loves to feed her family: daughters, son, grandchildren. She shows her love to them through food.

Happy Birthday, Angela.
Tu esposo que te quiere mucho.
Hugo.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz_eJqQCCig&Feature=related

I remember Sucre, Bolivia, by 1971 when I was serving as a full time missionary, (38 years ago) and we used to listen to Joan Baez and her beautiful songs like this one.
I remember we used to sing this song in Spanish.
"Donde estan los jovenes
De hace tiempo?
Donde estan los jovenes
De mucho tiempo atras?
Donde estan los jovenes?
Son soldados todos.
Cuando aprenderan?
Cuando aprenderan?
Donde estan los soldados
De hace tiempo?
Donde estan los soldados
De mucho tiempo atras?
Donde estan los soldados?
Estan en tumbas todos.
Cuando aprenderan?
Cuando aprenderan?
Donde estan las tumbas
De hace tiempo?
Donde estan las tumbas
De mucho tiempo atras?
Donde estan las tumbas?
Se han vuelto flores.
Cuando aprenderan?
Cuando aprenderan?
I also remember my companion: Elder Stephen McNaughton.

Scofield Reservoir

On Labor Day we went fishing to Scofield lake. It's a nice place to rest and go fishing.

Nice landscape, uphill the Spanish Fork canyon.

You have to head to Price until the exit to Scofield.

There's a lot of trouts up there. But I caught just one.

Angela caught several crawfish.

Angela, Ale and Vero had a nice time catching crawfish.

It was really fun for them.

But somebody stole a wallet or purse from another car parked close to us.

My face turned red because of a terrible sun burn.

Once at home I fried and ate my trout.
