Yesterday we had a special meeting for adults after Sunday School. The branch presidency told us to share 2 stanzas of one of our favorite hymns, and all would sing.
I shared the story of the hymn "God Moves in a Mysterious Way" (285) by William Cowper (1731-1800).
One version of the story says that the author suffered from times of deep melancholy and strong depression. One night he was in a particularly dark mood of despair and decided to take his life by jumping into the Thames River.
He took his horse and carriage and headed to the river, thinking on his life he fell asleep, the horse turned around and headed back to the house. When he woke up we found himself on the doorstep of his own home.
Other version says that that night London was blanketed with an extremely heavy fog and he lost his way, searching to find the river he found himself back on the front door of his own home. Going to his room he wrote the words of this beautiful hymn:
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perfom;
He plants his footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.
Ye fearful Saints fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessing on your head.
